Get Active Communities

The Get Active vision for a healthier Wood County means communities will have plentiful access to nutritious, affordable foods and increased opportunities for children and adults to be more physically active. This vision extends into schools, businesses, restaurants, child care centers, community gardens and more.

In many communities, a lack of healthy food and opportunities for physical activity are a major component of the obesity epidemic.  Wood County is addressing the obesity issue by partnering with:

  • Local restaurants: by implementing healthy menu labeling.
  • Local worksites: by increasing employee access to healthy snacks and opportunities for physical activity during the workday.
  • Local farmers markets: by making fresh, nutritious foods available to FoodShare recipients.
  • Local childcare centers and afterschool programs: by creating policies that create better nutritional standards and guidelines for increased physical activity, and limit TV viewing.
  • Non-profit organizations, businesses and schools: by encouraging the creation of community gardens.
  • Health care providers: by improving access to healthy foods for staff, patients and guests.
  • Local facilities; by increasing access to affordable, safe places for physical activity.
